Spoilers and their Spoilage

I am no fan of spoilers. If I am looking forward to something (a book, a TV show, a movie) I make it a studious practice of avoiding anything that might hint at the plot, the twists or even if there is a surprise. I’ll read a review for about two lines to get the sense of whether the reviewer liked it or didn’t and then stop, for fear the reviewer has forgotten his job and gone and spoiled the premise for his readers.

Because, ladies and gentleman, IMHO the job of a reviewer is NOT to give away the … Read more »

What Authors Shouldn't Do . . .

So last week I talked about how great you all are, and this week I’ll share what authors are usually up to before a book comes out. Really, if you think we are all successful, well-adjusted and basically lofty individuals and you want to hold onto that delusion, please read no further. It only gets ugly from here.

Now most authors I know spend the two weeks before their book comes out fussing. Not just fussing, but pacing around. Waiting. You see we’ve spent months, years even waiting for this book to come out, for this story to get told … Read more »

What Readers Do . . .

Is come out of the woodwork and comment like crazy. Wow! Was I overwhelmed at how many of you took the time to enter my contest. Keep those comments coming because they all count. What also overwhelmed me was that so many of you have said that you can’t wait for Tempted by the Night to come out, and believe me I really, really appreciate hearing that. You don’t know how much such bubbly praise makes an author’s day.

Nor should I tell you that I have a copy of the book sitting on my desk–I usually get a … Read more »

My Conference Excess is Your Gain

(Please note that this contest ended on August 25th.  But please visit my contest page to win other fun prizes!)

When you go to the RWA conference there is a ton of free stuff to pick up. Everywhere. Books, bookmarks, pens, pencils, publisher’s tchotchkes, and more books. This year I exercised due restraint, mostly because I knew the DH would be around when I was packing up and I’d have to hear the complaints of “why are you bringing that stuff home?” Okay, he’d probably call it all junk, but he’s a man and just doesn’t get it.

But quite … Read more »

Since the Excerpt for Tempted by the Night is Up

I thought I’d tease you further with an edited letter from Valarie, a reviewer who was lucky enough to get to read an early edition of the book. Her email is edited because she shares a HUGE spoiler in it and I know that none of you would want to have the book spoiled by seeing too much. So here is what Valarie wrote:

Hi Elizabeth,

WOW! Loved it, Loved it, Loved it, and let me just say again, LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

You’re right, I never expected THAT. I loved both Rockhurst and Hermione, but I never would have guessed what

A little bit of everything

So this week has been filled with, like the title says, a little bit of everything. I usually am not huge on tooting my own horn, but I’ve gotten sent this from a bunch of people, so I thought I’d share, ’cause I’m sort of proud of it. This came through in the Romantic Times Newsletter:

Elizabeth Boyle is our lead Clubhouse for September. We were inspired by our senior historical romance reviewer, Kathe Robin, who read her latest book, TEMPTED BY THE NIGHT, and immediately called us to rave about it. We just love it when a book grabs

Let Them Eat Cake . . .

I have to admit it. I suck at decorating cakes. I mean, I really stink at it. And don’t suggest a cake decorating class. I flunked. Twice. It is humbling to have the cake decorating teacher suggest, ever-so-politely, that while my desire to learn how to make cakes special for my children’s birthdays was admirable, I might want to just buy them from Safeway. Sigh.

And then there was the Seven Minute disaster. I called my mom in tears after I had gone through all my sugar and eggs and 4, yes, FOUR attempts to make Seven Minute Frosting. “Mom, … Read more »

April Fool's in July

Oh, come on. Did you really think I was going to give away the spoiler? Sorry, but you’ll have to wait until August 26th to find out what made Val cry.  Please, go back and finish reading today’s blog and have a great day.

Oh, and make a big deal about this in the comments over there and see how many other people we can lure in.… Read more »

Getting My Irish On

Now that used to mean getting myself down to the nearest pub and . . . well, singing a lot of Irish songs into the night. And perhaps imbibing in a pint or two. (Kit, this is the point where you don’t snort your coffee all over your keyboard, nor do you comment.) But life is so very different now. This year it has turned into discovering my Irish roots in another way: Discovering the most authenticate and perfect recipe for Irish Soda Bread.

This all started about a week ago when my son’s teacher put out a call for … Read more »
