My Favorite Pic From the Conference

I always come back with conference with my mind filled with wonderful vignettes of memories. Because to me conference is always so fragmented–you run into old friends here and there, unexpected meetings, new friends, off to a workshop, dinner, lunch, last minute changes, bad shoes.

And this year was no different. Some of my highlights were meeting Anna Campbell for the first time, and though I only got to chat with her for a little bit, she was one of those people that you meet and know is a kindred spirit. She loves to travel and I am so envious of all the time she’s spent in the UK. Jane Porter had told me how truly lovely she was and Jane was right–Anna is a delightful lady.

I also got a chance to chat with Beverly Jenkins for just the length of a bus ride from one hotel to another. It wasn’t enough time, but it reminded me of how much I respect her and how I’ve never gotten a good chance to get to know her. I had been thinking of her earlier in the week, and was thrilled to find myself sitting by her on the bus.

But the biggest highlight was sitting next to Julia Quinn at the Awards Ceremony when she won her RITA. I realized that she’d won before she did (which is probably the first time I think I’ve ever beaten Julia to the punch!), but then again it might have been the deafening scream I let out that stunned her for a few seconds giving me the advantage. Seeing a good friend, someone who has been mentor and sister to me for so many years win, was thrilling.

But then there was the issue of how she was going to get RITA home. Well, I have to tell you, she traveled in style. Well, in Coach actually:

    What a priceless photo!

I adore Anna C., too, very been visiting back and forth since Avon fanlit, she’s just a dear.

I thought the entire awards ceremony was so impressive; an Oscar ceremony that actually mattered to me πŸ™‚ One of my favorite memories was Tamera Alexander winning, because I had visited at length with her mother earlier in the day, and that dear lady was so excited for her daughter. I just teared up when she won and then said, “Mom, I love you.” The person next to me said “Do you know her?” and I had to say, “Oh, well, no, but I’m running out to buy all her books tomorrow!”

“very been” should be “we’ve been”–gracious, I’ve only been drinking iced tea, really!

Thank you for sharing the picture. I saw Julia leaving the hotel with the Rita peeking discretely out of the top of her carryon bag and I started wondering how you get it into the cabin ( I mean you can’t bring on a full sized bottle of shampoo lest you try to wash the stewardess’s hair en route, and this statute was a honkin’ big piece of metal. But obviously Julia had enough charm to get past the TSA.

It was a wonderful ceremony and we were screaming our lungs out when she won. So deserving and such a great reaction.

Oh my gosh! Millie you’re killing me here! I was laughing so hard, the husband had to come see what was wrong with me haha.

I was wondering the same thing, about how they got home safely. Because you know they aren’t going to allow their RITA to be in the checked luggage.

Love the picture that was a well deserved award and I have met Anna Campbell and agree she is one witty and talented lady. Sounds like everyone had a wonderful time at the conference maybe one day I will be able to go.
    Have Fun

Anna is a fabulous, fabulous bud.

Elizabeth, thanks much for putting up that picture. Loved seeing how Ms. RITA traveled home in style.

Isn’t it just priceless. We all kind of held our breath as it was going through security and then they stopped me because I had a water bottle in my bag, I’d totally forgotten. Go figure!

Helen, National is great fun, but if you have never been to a conference–try a smaller local one first–because Nationals can be overwhelming if you haven’t dipped your toes into a smaller pool before!
